Other refinishers want to use the brush and roller method of simply painting the bathtub. Why? It's cheap. Epoxy paint cost about $95 / Gallon and can be purchased from most paint stores. Is that a bad thing? To the average consumer that doesn't know any better it's just an honest mistake. For a professional that advertises refinishing then uses paint it is unethical. The problem with painting a bathtub goes deeper then the fact it just wont last as long. When Epoxy is painted on a bathtub you will notice it is not a true white. It will have a yellowish tint to it. This is done because Epoxy turns yellow when it comes in contact with bleach. So to offset that the manufacturers of these Epoxy Kits shade it slightly yellow, then label it white. Cosmetics aside, the epoxy paint kits simply don't have everything needed to refinish a bathtub so it last.

Here is the part that puzzles me. To replace a bathtub you will need a contractor, then the tub has a lip on it so the tile will need to be removed. Now You will need to deal with dust, several people in your home for several hours a day. However, the minor inconveniences aside let's just assume we have a 100% honest contractor. Let's assume they are great people and hard workers and just simply want to do an honest days work for an honest day's pay. Let's assume dust and different people in the home and time frame are not even remotely an issue. So that leaves us with price. This is why these cheap epoxy kits confuse me. When you just consider price you will be looking at a contractor, a plumber, a tile guy and the cost of a bathtub. Depending on labor cost The average cost for replacing a bathtub is over $5,000.00. However, let's pretend we can cut that down to $1500.00. Why would a cheap Epoxy kit for $45 - $60 even exist? I can understand 20 years ago but they have god awful reviews, they peel, they are just paint! Why would they still market this trash? Most people that try them don't even report a problem because they figure they did something wrong. The thought is well "If I would have sanded it more". The truth is it's not the consumer's fault. Truth is, they were dealing with an inferior product to begin with. They were dealing with 1990's technology in 2022. What if you were using a 1990 model computer and trying to look up websites.... I mean is it your fault the computer would lag? No, it's simply out dated technology. We needed that 1990 technology to propel us to what we have today! It is the same thing with refinishing. Bathtub Refinishing and I mean true bathtub refinishing, not bathtub painting. Is accomplished through the process of etching the old surface, applying a molecular bonding agent so it melts into the pores and scratches caused by etching. Then coated with synthetic porcelain. True Bathtub Refinishing makes the new surface an integral part of the fixture. It's not laying on top of the old surface, it is fused into the old surface.
I DO NOT use contractors, sub contractors or hired help! I do all work Myself so I bring that 26 years of experience with me! Below you can see my:
